Mental illness in Canada costs an estimated $51 billion per year. Many organizations are unaware of the massive hit on their bottom line as a direct result of mental illness in the workplace. These costs include increased drug costs, absenteeism, disability claims, decreased productivity and other issues related general cognitive “fog.” A comprehensive report on the cost for workplace mental illness can be found here.
The Economic Club of Canada, Excellence Canada and BestLifeRewarded Innovations, founders of the BestLifeRewarded health behaviour change program, developed the Mental Health at Work® Challenge as part of a “coordinated assault” to change the face of mental health in Canada.
- Raise awareness for the significant impact of mental illness in the workplace
- Support employees with the tools and resources they need to foster a healthy, productive workplace and seek appropriate help if needed
- Encourage employers to take immediate action with small steps to start the process of implementing the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace
